Regenerative medicine plays an increasingly important role in managing tendon, ligament and joint injuries in performance horses. At McAdam Equine, biologic therapies are selected carefully and applied precisely, guided by diagnostic imaging and evidence-based protocols.
These therapies aim to improve tissue quality during healing, reduce inflammation, support return to athletic function and potentially reduce recurrence rates. Each case is individually assessed to determine suitability, timing and integration within a wider rehabilitation plan. Regenerative medicine is not a shortcut - it is a carefully managed component of a structured recovery strategy.
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)
PRP is produced from the horse's own blood and contains a concentrated population of platelets rich in growth factors. These growth factors help to:
- Stimulate tissue repair
- Improve fibre organisation in tendon and ligament healing
- Modulate inflammation
- Support recovery following soft tissue injury
PRP is commonly used for suspensory ligament injury, superficial and deep digital flexor tendon lesions, collateral ligament injuries and selected joint conditions. Treatment is performed under ultrasound guidance to ensure precise delivery to the affected structure.
Alpha-2 Macroglobulin (A2M)
Alpha-2 Macroglobulin is a naturally occurring protein involved in regulating inflammation within joints. When concentrated and administered intra-articularly, A2M aims to:
- Reduce destructive inflammatory enzymes
- Protect cartilage
- Improve joint comfort
- Support longevity in athletic horses
This therapy is most commonly indicated in early joint disease, performance-related synovitis and as part of a structured joint management programme.
Our Approach
Biologic treatments are not standalone solutions. Success depends on accurate diagnosis, correct case selection, timely intervention, high-quality imaging and controlled rehabilitation. The objective is not simply healing, but functional, athletic recovery - McAdam Equine aims to optimise tissue quality and reduce recurrence risk in performance horses across all disciplines.
